The Rock Creek wrestling team participated at their home tournament on January 24th, and would not give up without a fight for first place.
Rock Creek faced Manhattan, Great Bend, Washburn Rural, Burlingame, and Riverside. With a record of 4-1 in the tournament with a close loss to Washburn Rural, the Rock Creek team earned second place. For the girls’ team, senior Alyssa Troyer earned 3rd place individually and sophomore Grace Shepard earned 4th place individually. In the match against Great Bend, the Rock Creek boys’ team had suffered a 33-0 deficit at the start, but as the match continued, the team climbed back and won the match against Great Bend.
“It was very exciting when we started getting the ball rolling,” sophomore Spencer Bard said, “After we lost all of those light-weight matches, it was very tough to get the ball rolling but we ended up getting back up top.”
The team has their next match up against Manhattan on January 28th, and are ready for anything that Manhattan brings to them. With the approaching state competition the team will be ready with plenty of entries, as well as possible returners.
“Our team record is looking well. (junior) Drew (Burnheide), (junior) Tanner (Shoup) looks like will go to state and we will have a ton of new blood this year,” Senior Elijah Grenot says, “A lot of our upperclassmen and seniors are looking well, and our underclassmen are working hard in practice, so we are doing pretty well.”
