The Rock Creek cheer team held tryouts for new winter cheerleaders on Nov. 5-7. The tryouts were held in order to fill the positions of the cheerleaders who participate in basketball.
According to judge Kellie Milner, the girls trying out for the team were required to have two cheers and one dance memorized before trying out.
“It’s hard judging when you know the students,” Milner said. “But, it’s really fun getting to see what my students can do outside of the classroom.”
Milner then went on to say that at some point during the tryouts, it was awkward because only five girls tried out. Of those, senior Yasmine Flores, sophomore Kara Riffel and freshman Shelby Helget made the team.
Riffel was involved in cheerleading throughout her junior high years and decided to try out for the winter sports season.
“I really missed doing it [cheerleading],” Riffel said. “I just really love the energy, especially during the boys [basketball] games.”
Riffel, a new squad member, is very excited about cheering for Rock Creek.
As a current member of the cheer team, sophomore Katelynn Sherwood said she was excited to welcome new members to the winter squad.
“It’s really fun getting to know new girls,” Sherwood said.
