News: Band members earn seats in district honor band

With the chance to qualify for the district Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) honor band, band teacher Nathan Craft took senior Adam Thew, junior Eli Miller and sophomores Debbie Berg, Casey Bowers and Alexa Goforth to audition for the KMEA district honor band on Nov. 7 at Junction City High School.

“I got the opportunity to go to another school and audition for the district band,” Bowers said. “I also had the chance to meet new people.”

The five musicians and band director traveled 45 minutes to audition for the band, and three of them returned as a part of the district band.

“We had three talented musicians qualify for the district band,” Craft said. “We had senior Adam Thew, junior Eli Miller and sophomore Casey Bowers.”

Miller said that hopes to use this opportunity to help get a scholarship in the future.

“I am glad I made the district band, and now I plan on practicing to audition for the KMEA state honor band,” Miller said. “I also hope to use this opportunity as a way to get scholarships in college.”

Although Berg and Goforth did not make it, they still were very happy with how they did.

“I did not qualify for districts, but I was very close, and I will work harder on my solo to get a superior rating at the league, regional and state festivals,” Berg said.

Knowing what the band has ahead, the students prepare for their upcoming band concert on Dec. 17 at the Rock and for qualifying for the state band in the spring.

“I am excited for the concert on the 17th and am excited to practice my audition music for state.” Bowers said.

Craft is also ready for the competitions next spring, although he said that the students will need to prepare well to place at state.

“I am very excited for state this year,” Craft said. “I think the three musicians who qualified for state have a very good chance for making the state band. The only thing that would hold them back would be not practicing their music, but that shouldn’t be a problem. All three know the opportunity they have ahead.”
