Hard work and determination is what the Rock Creek varsity cheerleaders put forward for not only the football team, but also the basketball team. The cheerleaders supported the varsity basketball team when they headed out to compete at the state tournament that was hosted in Wichita the week before Spring Break. While they have cheered on the basketball team in past years, they were selected out of multiple other cheer squads to perform a dance during halftime of the sub-state and state games.
“We cheered at sub-state last year and state last year, sub-state and state this year, so [we have performed] four [times],” junior Casey Helget said.
The varsity squad performed a dance at the sub-state tournament in Chapman to the song “Jock Jams Mega Mix.” The dance that they performed at state was the same, but had a few alterations in order to wow the crowd even more. Some of the alterations were the use of pom poms throughout the entire dance, the adjusting of gaps and a new kickline. The squad also did their usual cheers to help pump up the crowd and the team.
“The dance is very versatile and packed full of hard work and determination,” junior Cassidy Cheever said.
The crowd raved about the squad’s performances at sub-state and state. This allowed for the cheer season to come to a joyous end. For some of the cheerleaders, this rare chance to perform a dance at sub-state and state tournaments were the last times they wore their Rock Creek cheer squad uniform. While the moments were bittersweet, they were definitely one they will not forget.
“The season went by so fast, I didn’t realize it was coming to an end,” senior Abbie Plummer said. “But, it was a fun ride, and it will be fun to see what the squad will be like next year since there are so many seniors leaving.”
