Sports: Season begins for experience-filled track team

Track season practices began on March 10  for all those who went out this season.

While many of the athletes who participated last year are returning, there are new coaches helping out with some events, including coach Mike Beam and coach Mark Oberkrom.

“They will help us with all the track participants in different events,” head coach Mike Zabel said.

The first track meet will be held on April 3 at Silver Lake.

“I feel like we have a good opportunity, and good chance at league this year,” senior Ryan Schneider said. “One of the things we need to do as a team this year is focus. We need to have focus in practice and outside of practice, and if we do this, we have the tendency to be really good. Other things we need to work on as a team is being prepared, eating healthy, getting the right nutrients and staying in shape, if we want to make it to state.”

With most athletes returning and with new coaches being added, each athlete has his or her own goal.

“My goal for this year is to break my own pole vault record at Rock Creek and get 10 feet,” said junior Rachel Forrester, who holds the pole vault record at Rock Creek, which she broke last season.

Overall, the coaches and the athletes are looking forward to a successful season.

“Last year’s track season was good, but this year, I think we will succeed more with new coaches and new practices,” Zabel said.
