Dribbling down the court, the Mustang girls basketball team started off their season at home against Clay Center on Dec. 2 and improved to 5-0 on the season before winter break.
The varsity girls have played against Clay Center, Abilene, Council Grove, Wabaunsee and Rossville with a win of 56-32 against Clay Center, 49-45 against Abilene, 50-21 against Council Grove, 48-20 against Rossville and 43-36 against Wabaunsee.
Junior starter and point guard Shiann Bruce said, “The first game we played really well as a team. The whole team is really unselfish, which helps us get it to the open person, and make more shots.”
Junior Codi Ebert added onto Bruce’s comments, saying, “We have had a really good defense every game.”
The games against Abilene, Council Grove, Wabaunsee and Rossville were all match-ups in the Dickinson County Classic, which the Mustangs won.
Head coach Michael Zabel said, “The varsity team has started out 5-0 and won the Dickinson County Classic for the third time in the last four years, so we obviously have had a great start to the season.”
Senior starter Jessica Snapp said that this year will continue to be successful “as long as [senior] Lizz [Herrs] doesn’t get hurt.”
Zabel added on to that, by saying, “We will always just try to get better during the course of the season.”
