Before the first tournament of the season at Mission Valley on Dec. 3, high school head wrestling coach Dan Pray and senior returner Trevor Sutton gave their opinion of the upcoming season.
1. How do you expect the upcoming season to go?
Pray – “It looks to be a strong season for the Mustang wrestling team. We sent five to state last year, and three of the five return, led by seniors Shane Schaake and Trevor Sutton with Marc Reiss, a sophomore, also making it to state last year.”
Sutton – “An exciting, great season full of many adventures.”
2. Who are this year’s leaders and or key players for the team?
Pray – “We have four seniors that have been with the program all four years: Shane Schaake, Sam Wilson, Levi Anderson and Trevor Sutton. Each one of them brings a good attitude and much experience to lead the Mustangs. Other stand-out wrestlers this year are freshman Shilo Schaake and sophomore Marc Reiss.”
Sutton – “Myself, senior Shane Shaake, senior Levi Anderson and sophomore Marc Reiss.”
3. What team is going to be the toughest opponent for the team this year?
Pray – “We look forward to wrestling every team in the MEL, but Rossville and Silver Lake beat us by a combined three points last season. We are looking for another good showdown this year.”
Sutton – “Wellsville and then Rossville for the MEL team.”
4. What are your team goals this season?
Pray – “Last year, we took third in the MEL, we were in the top 10 at regional tournament, and we took five wrestlers to state. Anything less this year would be a step backwards.”
Sutton – “Go 40-0 and win state.”
5. What needs improved before the first game?
Pray – “We need to get back to the basics. A winning attitude will go far in this sport.”
Sutton – “Myself, the sweep single; for the team, getting off our backs.”
